From: DISTINGUISHED GREEKS OF AZOV

 

Romeans - are one of many peoples of Ukraine, that inhabit the southwest of Donetsk area. Their number on census of 1989 is 98,6 thousands.  Within centuries they created and continue to create poetic works, which constitute their folklore heritage. Being arisen in national environment, mirroring social - poetic, aesthetic and diverse views, the works of folklore are characterized by steep nationality and have got a broad popularity.
The romean folklore in territory of Ukraine has a centuries-old history. Its roots leave deep into centuries, that is testified by samples of ceremonial and ballad poetry, magic fairy tales came down to us and which genesis is connected with the early forms of development of the human society.  Self-name of the Greek-speaking population of Donetsk area is Romeans, as they consider themselves to be originated from Roman empire, as against the Tatar-speaking Greeks ("Greek-Tatars"), acquired the Crimean-Tatar language in conditions of  residing in Crimean Chanat.  During centuries Romeans has advanced own genre classification of song's and dancing folklore, that consist of terminology of songs, dances and musical organs.

ARHIP KUINJI (1842-1910)

Arhip Kuinji, one of the most famous Russian artists of second half of 19th century, was born in Mariupol in 1842.
