The Australian Tannock Connection

First of all, allow me to introduce myself.  My name is John Tannock, I am 50 years of age and live about an hour and a half (by car) west of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia.  My wife (Chris) and I have an Avocado farm in the Toowoomba Ranges.

The name "Tannock" is not common out here and most people we have come across (in Australia anyway), can be traced back to a common ancestor within 3 or 4 generations. My grandparents had a family bible which originated from a Lord Carson in Ireland who had a daughter Sarah Ann.  She emigrated to Australia, married and had a daughter Martha Moore, who married a Mr. John Tannock at the Wickham St Presbyterian Church in Brisbane in 1854.  They had a number of sons (5 I think), one of whom was my grandfather - Edward John Tannock.

My Grandfather was a bit of an adventurer.  After serving with the Australian Army in the Boer War in South Africa, he returned to live there after the war. Just before the First World War, he returned to Australia where he became a Veterinary Surgeon and spent most of the rest of his life in western Queensland.

I have been told that the Tannocks originally came from the same part of Scotland as Robbie Burns. In fact, he was reputed to enjoy drinking at Mattie Tannock's Tavern.  We found this interesting as my father's oldest sister is called Mattie Tannock (she is still alive and well at the age of 96 and lives in the western Queensland town of Cunnamulla).

We have three children. Cameron, the eldest, has a Human Resource Management degree and is working in the hospitality area on Hayman Island in north Queensland. Leah, our eldest daughter, is a public relations consultant in Brisbane, and Alexis, our youngest, is in her final year of a science degree at Queensland University.

I gather the town of Kilmarnock is where the Tannocks originated.  I was not aware of that until reading your web page.  I am unclear as to where you are living, I assume it is in Scotland

My father is another John Tannock. Although I am named Edward John after my grandfather, I have always been called John.  I also have a cousin John Tannock, who lives in Cairns in north Queensland.

As stated above, the first occasion a Tannock appears in the family bible is when John Tannock married Martha Moore.  It would be interesting to find out more of his background.

Another little piece of information which may be of interest was the the very first challenge to the New York Yacht Club for the Americas Cup was on a boat called the Cambria skippered by a John Tannock.  I was quite proud of this fact in the period after we won the Americas Cup in 1983. My enthusiasm waned after Chris pointed out to me that he was the first of a long line of losers!!!
