John McGawn was born on December 22, 1830 in Ayr Scotland. His father was William McGawn buried in Alloway Kirk in ayr, Scotland. John came to the Us at the age of 21 , it took him six weeks in a sailing vessel, he had a very rough crossing and was sea sick much of the time. He settled in Cook county Illinois where he had an older brother Gilbert and an older sister Jeanette. Johns mother may also have moved to the Us as she warned that "red headed twins run in the McGawn family".
